The MP, who was in Delhi during the monsoon session of Parliament, virtually attended the Tobacco Board meeting held on Thursday. On this occasion, MP Putta Mahesh Kumar brought to the attention of the board the fall in tobacco prices at the purchasing centers this year and the debt problems of farmers. Later, the MP released a video statement on the details of the meeting. He said that he, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Agriculture Minister Atchannaidu have spoken to the Union Commerce Minister, the Chairman and members of the board several times to help the tobacco farmers. The MP revealed that the Tobacco Board has agreed to provide an interest-free loan of Rs 50,000 per barrel in the meeting held today. He said that this will provide some relief to the farmers who have grown "low grade" tobacco.
The MP said that it is true that the price has come down significantly this year due to international developments, but that farmers are also growing more than allowed, which is causing problems. The MP said that difficulties have arisen as companies have not come forward to purchase low grade tobacco, and that they are working hard to provide remunerative prices. The MP explained that their goal is to make farmers happy, and that they have worked hard to get a good price for tobacco in the last two years and have managed to get a maximum of Rs. 470 per kg, and this year they are making every effort to keep it above 300 at least.
